Bio

Persia Campbell is a photographer and director born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, whose practice has developed across both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border. Her work focuses on the representation of women from northern Mexico, using staged photography to reconstruct the intimate visual culture of the border region and its layered identities.

Campbell’s work has been exhibited internationally in cities including Paris, London, New York, Milan, Barcelona, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. Her first series, Itinerario de una mujer en la frontera (Itinerary of a Woman on the Border), was presented at the Barcelona Biennial of Photography, where it received first place in the self portrait category. The series also won first place in the same category at the International Photography Awards and was a finalist in the LensCulture Art Photography Awards 2021. It was later exhibited in Paris in the Just Women section at the Joseph Le Palais gallery near the Pompidou Center.

Her second series, Reminiscencias de la Frontera (Reminiscences of the Border), received international recognition after winning the Female in Focus award by the British Journal of Photography, one of the oldest photography institutions in the world. The series was exhibited in London and published by The Guardian. It was also included in the FONCA group exhibition Creación en Movimiento at the Museo de San Ildefonso in Mexico City. The main photograph of the series, 2006, was selected by Damarice Amao, curator of photography at the Pompidou Center, as a winner of the Colors competition organized by Life Frame. The image was later exhibited in New York by the British Journal of Photography and received second place in a major international contest organized by TIME Magazine and the ASMP.

In 2023 Campbell presented her first solo exhibition with Almanaque Gallery in Mexico City featuring the series Ficheras. The series was later selected by Vogue International to be presented at the Vogue Photography Festival in Milan in 2025, and Vogue named Campbell among the 100 most promising photographic artists in the Latin American scene.

Campbell has been selected twice for Mexico’s National Endowment for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) Jóvenes Creadores program, one of the most prestigious public arts grants in the country, most recently in 2026.

In recent years her work has continued to circulate internationally. In 2026 she participated in Zona Maco in Mexico City with Almanaque Fotografía and in the collective exhibition Madre Tierra presented by the same gallery. Her work was also exhibited again at the Imagenation exhibition in New York and presented during Los Angeles Art Week at The Reef alongside Momentum Gallery. That same year she was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards 2026.

In 2026 Campbell will also participate in a collective exhibition at AIPAD (The Photography Show) in New York, presenting her work alongside photographers such as Graciela Iturbide and other internationally recognized artists.

Persia Campbell es una fotógrafa y directora nacida en Ciudad Juárez, México, cuya práctica artística se ha desarrollado a ambos lados de la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Su trabajo se centra en la representación de mujeres del norte de México, utilizando la fotografía escenificada para reconstruir las estéticas íntimas y cotidianas de la región fronteriza.

Su obra ha sido exhibida internacionalmente en ciudades como París, Londres, Nueva York, Milán, Barcelona, Los Ángeles y Ciudad de México. Su primera serie, Itinerario de una mujer en la frontera, fue presentada en la Bienal de Fotografía de Barcelona, donde obtuvo el primer lugar en la categoría de autorretrato. Esta serie también recibió el primer lugar en la misma categoría en los International Photography Awards y fue finalista en los LensCulture Art Photography Awards 2021. Posteriormente fue exhibida en París en la sección Just Women de la galería Joseph Le Palais, ubicada cerca del Centro Pompidou.

Su segunda serie, Reminiscencias de la Frontera, obtuvo reconocimiento internacional al ganar el concurso Female in Focus organizado por el British Journal of Photography, una de las instituciones fotográficas más antiguas del mundo. La serie fue exhibida en Londres y publicada por The Guardian. Asimismo formó parte de la exposición colectiva Creación en Movimiento del FONCA, presentada en el Museo de San Ildefonso en Ciudad de México. La fotografía principal de la serie, 2006, fue seleccionada por Damarice Amao, curadora de fotografía del Centro Pompidou en París, como ganadora del concurso Colors organizado por Life Frame, quien señaló: “Behind the superficial idealism of this brilliantly executed image, there’s a cleverly constructed comment on the modern world.” Esta obra fue posteriormente exhibida en Nueva York por el British Journal of Photography y obtuvo el segundo lugar en un importante concurso internacional organizado por TIME Magazine y la ASMP.

En 2023 Campbell presentó su primera exposición individual con la galería Almanaque en Ciudad de México con la serie Ficheras. Esta serie fue posteriormente seleccionada por Vogue International para presentarse en el Vogue Photography Festival en Milán en 2025. Asimismo, Vogue la incluyó entre los 100 artistas fotográficos más prometedores de la escena latinoamericana.

En años recientes su obra ha continuado presentándose en distintos contextos internacionales. En 2026 participó en Zona Maco en Ciudad de México junto a la galería Almanaque Fotografía y formó parte de la exposición colectiva Madre Tierra presentada por la misma galería. Su trabajo también fue exhibido nuevamente en Imagenation en Nueva York y presentado durante la Semana del Arte de Los Ángeles en The Reef, en colaboración con Momentum Gallery. Ese mismo año fue seleccionada en la lista corta de los Sony World Photography Awards 2026.

En 2026 Campbell participará también en una exposición colectiva en AIPAD (The Photography Show) en Nueva York, presentando su trabajo junto a fotógrafas como Graciela Iturbide y otras artistas de reconocimiento internacional.
