Bio

Persia Campbell is a photographer and director born in Ciudad Juárez. She has developed her artistic practice between Mexico and the United States, with a sustained focus on the representation of women from northern Mexico. Her work primarily engages staged photography as a means to reconstruct and examine the intimate aesthetic of the border region, as well as the narratives of identity, gender, and territory that emerge from this context.

Her work has been exhibited in institutions and exhibition spaces in cities including Mexico City, Paris, London, New York, Milan, and Barcelona. Her first body of work, Itinerary of a Woman on the Border, was presented at the Barcelona Photography Biennial, where it received first place in the self-portrait category. The series was later exhibited in Paris as part of the Just Women section at the Joseph Le Palais gallery and was included in the exhibition Declaraciones Cuerpo at Centro de la Imagen, presented with the support of Chile’s Ministry of Culture and the Mexican government. The series was also shown at Zona Maco 2024.

In 2023, Campbell presented her first solo exhibition with Almanaque Fotográfica in Mexico City, featuring the series Ficheras. In 2025, she held her second solo show with the same gallery, further consolidating her exhibition practice. In 2026, she participated in Zona Maco, one of the most significant contemporary art fairs in Latin America.

Her second series, Reminiscences of the Border, received international recognition after being awarded in the Female in Focus competition organized by the British Journal of Photography. The series was exhibited in London, published by The Guardian, and included in the FONCA group exhibition Creación en Movimiento at the Museo de San Ildefonso. The central image of the series, 2006, was selected by Damarice Amao, curator of photography at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as the winning work of the Colors competition organized by Life Frame. Amao noted that the image articulates a carefully constructed commentary on the contemporary world beneath its apparent formal idealism. The photograph was later exhibited in New York by the British Journal of Photography and received second place in a competition organized by TIME magazine and the ASMP.

Campbell’s work has been published in international and specialized publications including Nylon Magazine, Vice, Vogue, Cuartoscuro, The Guardian, and Time Magazine. She was also named by Vogue as one of the 100 most notable photographers in the Latin American contemporary scene, and her series Ficheras was selected by Vogue International to be presented at the Vogue Photography Festival in Milan in 2025.

Persia Campbell es fotógrafa y directora nacida en Ciudad Juárez. Ha desarrollado su práctica artística entre México y Estados Unidos, articulando una práctica centrada en la representación de las mujeres del norte de México. Su trabajo se articula principalmente a través de la fotografía escenificada, entendida como un dispositivo para reconstruir y analizar la estética íntima de la región fronteriza, así como las narrativas de identidad, género y territorio que emergen de este contexto.

Su obra ha sido exhibida en instituciones y espacios internacionales en ciudades como Ciudad de México, París, Londres, Nueva York, Milán y Barcelona. Su primera serie, Itinerario de una mujer en la frontera, fue presentada en la Bienal de Fotografía de Barcelona, donde obtuvo el primer lugar en la categoría de autorretrato. Posteriormente, esta serie fue exhibida en París en la sección Just Women de la galería Joseph Le Palais y formó parte de la exposición Declaraciones Cuerpo en el Centro de la Imagen, realizada con el apoyo del Ministerio de Cultura de Chile y el gobierno mexicano. La serie también fue presentada en Zona Maco 2024.

Su segunda serie, Reminiscencias de la Frontera, fue reconocida internacionalmente al ser premiada en el concurso Female in Focus, organizado por el British Journal of Photography. La serie fue exhibida en Londres, publicada por The Guardian y formó parte de la exposición colectiva del FONCA Creación en Movimiento, presentada en el Museo de San Ildefonso. La imagen principal de la serie, 2006, fue seleccionada por Damarice Amao, curadora de fotografía del Centro Pompidou en París, como ganadora del concurso Colors, organizado por Life Frame, quien destacó que la obra propone un comentario críticamente construido sobre el mundo moderno más allá de su apariencia formal.
